So get your VIC20 emulators ready, and head on over to Psytronik’s site to purchase/download these great turn based, party based dungeon crawlers and fight some monsters today! Taking a walk in the dungeon -Realms of Quest V

Here are Mead and the crew, taking a leisurely stroll through one of the dunjons in Realms of Quest V.  Let there be color! This is great! In Realms of Quest V each dunjon in the game may have their own color styles.

For visual dungeon comparison with the previous 2 Realms of Quest games, below here is one of the dunjons in Realms of Quest III.

Realms of Quest IV had black and white wire-frame graphics, but much more features like traps, spinners, teleporters and other such things in their dunjons.

New Realms Font & Race/Class Tables-RoQV

A new Realms font is now replacing the Legacy font and allows both upper and lowercase letters. It is the official default font that will ship with the game, but you can still select the other fonts; (deluxe, fat128, system) via the configuration screen.

Both the Race and Class tables have been updated. The Proteus Class (Jack of all trades, master of none) has been replaced with a War Mage class which is a Fighter/Wizard/Cleric type class and will require the most experience points to advance levels. Races that also appeared in and were specific to J.R.R.Tolkien’s and/or Thomas Covenant’s works have been replaced with unique races that you can only find in this “Realms of Quest”.

Tunnels in the Walls -Realms of Quest V

While searching for Dorothy in the Emerald City, we discovered tunnels dug into the walls by a pair of Mole brothers (Moehlman, and Moehleman) . The latter of the two offers to join as an ally but only as an ally of a Neutral character. Secret passages can be seen as small black markers in the walls.

Or purple markers if using the Multi-Color tile graphic style.

The Moehleman’s got 125 Hit Points, and attacks at 1d20 swinging twice per attack with a healing spell as a fourth attack round.

Cities in Realms of Quest V – Bighy Woods

In Realms of Quest V, there will be cities that you can enter and wander around in similar to the city in Ultimate Quest. There will be townspeople that you can speak with and perhaps get tips from, + things to discover and do. Perhaps we might find some familiar locations like the Big H to purchase healing spells or Grimlocks Magical Guild for spells or other magical supplies, an inn to rest or other such locales.

Courtesan – Realms of Quest V

One of the new classes for player characters in Realms of Quest V is the Courtesan.  Courtesans are able to seduce humanoid type monsters for the purpose of recruiting them into your party as an ally that will fight with you against the monsters that you battle. Besides being able to fight monsters in your characters stead, ally’s are also useful in that if a monster attacks your courtesan character, the ally will be the one to take the HP damage and will fight with/for your Courtesan until death. The courtesan will not take any damage from enemy monsters until the the courtesan’s ally has exhausted all HP’s and has been defeated. Courtesans should have high Charisma in order to be effective at seducing.

Here is a listing of all humanoid type monsters that a courtesan might be able to seduce so be on the lookout for any of the following types of monsters…

In the battle above there is a humanoid monster group (4 Troglodytes), so we will attempt to have our courtesan (Alisha) seduce one of the Trogs. The Troglodytes have 3 Swing attacks, and 1 Stun attack per the charts above.

Woohoo! Alisha has successfully seduced a Troglodyte and it will now fight for our party as an ally of Alisha!

The Troglodyte now appears as an Ally on Alisha’s player characters statistics screen. The Troglodyte has 3 regular melee attacks of Swing and 1 special attack of Stun which if successful will eliminate 1 enemy monster upon each successful Stun attack. Now that the Trog is an ally, during Alisha’s next round she can have the ally attack on her behalf. First the courtesan chooses which monster group the ally will attack. We will choose to have the Trog attack the Ropers. If the ally kills an enemy monster, the kill is recorded as being the courtesan’s kill for advancing/leveling up purposes.

The stun attack removes 1 Roper from battle. When monsters are taken out, they are not killed, just removed from battle but at least it is 1 less monster to have to deal with. For leveling up purposes it is better to have monsters killed that way there is a chance that the player character might level up.

Here our ally Troglodyte uses a swing attack at an enemy monster.  From looking at the charts above, it would be very useful if a courtesan player character seduced one of the more tougher humanoid monsters such as a Titan, or Storm Giant or Fire Giant as they have Death / Fire attacks which would come in mighty handy in battle.

Treasure! – Realms of Quest V

If you’re lucky, you might find a treasure chest filled with gold and other valuable trinkets after defeating monsters in battle. Don’t just go opening up the chest without checking it thoroughly first.  Monsters are known to ensnare their locked valuables with sinister traps. You’ll need someone with thieving skills so be sure to bring along at least one (or more) of the following classes (Thief, Ninja, or Proteus). The more characters with thieving skills that you have in your party, the easier it will be to disarm the trap.

If you’re not so agile you might spring a trap. Watch out for poison darts, explosives, and sleeping gas triggers. If you get poisoned you can find aid at temples in the castle or have your priest or another class that can cast the priest’s cure poison spell. Rest at the Inn to recoup hit/spell points and to train, but try to stay at the more comfortable accommodations so you do not have to rest as long. It’s tough to get sleep when all you can afford is the stables and the animals that live there like to party late till the cows come home.

Also a new feature is the player hurt/wounded icon. When a monster hits a party member, a little icon of a medic kit will replace the checkmark. Small dot-like crosses appear when a party member is ready to train. There are other icons for poisoned, sleeping, stoned, and dead characters.
